What volunteer positions are needed at camp monty?

Willing hearts.
The most important volunteer that we need at Camp Monty is someone with a willing heart. The kids and families of Niksic do not care if you are the best at a sport or if you have ever even played a sport. They get excited to see us coming to town because they know that we love them. They tell us that the entire city lights up when we arrive. We know that the Light that comes with us is the Light of Jesus Christ. Bring that willing heart to share the love of Jesus Christ with you. Those are the volunteers with the most important roles
Coaches.
If you have experience in soccer, volleyball, American football, basketball, or tennis, you are a coach. We strive to have a head coach for each of these sports, so if you are an expert, please let us know!

English Teachers.
If you know English, you can help us teach an English class. These classes are held outside on the front lawn of the University, and they are very flexible. We have two teachers who have been with us for years and they create the lesson plans for the entire week. They come very prepared and organized. If you are willing, they will give you the lesson plans for your group each day, and you will teach a class!

Each teacher is paired with a translator. Usually the translator is a former student of the English classes, and they are excited to be a part of teaching younger students and their peers. It is a wonderful time to get to know the kids in a smaller setting than the sports sessions. Many of them speak a little bit of English, and many of them are very fluent. Either way they get excited about learning English!

Runners.
These are the volunteers who are willing to travel between sports sessions and make sure that each area of the Camp has what they need. While we take instant access to everyone through text messages and cellphone calls for granted in America, it is not easy in Montenegro. There is wifi throughout the city of Niksic, but it is spotty and unreliable. Runners and messengers are much more reliable and needed throughout the week.

Evangelists.
While sports and teaching English are a lot of fun, they are the activities that we provide that allows us to hold Camp Monty in the city of Niksic, Montenegro. This area of the world is not widely open to Christians or the Bible. However, the government of Montenegro does not mind if we share the gospel of Jesus Christ...as long as we continue to teach the kids about sports and English.

That means that our days are filled with sports sessions and English classes, but the evenings are where all of us go out into the town and talk to as many people as we can about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  It is an incredible time of meeting locals and seeing lives changed for Eternity!

What do I need to do to travel to montenegro?

In order to travel to Montenegro you will only need to have a passport.
There is no requirement for a visa to travel to Montenegro.
There is no requirement for vaccinations to travel to Montenegro.

What will I need to bring with me to Camp Monty?

As much as you can, travel light!

Many airlines require extra fees to check luggage, and the cost is anywhere from $25-50 per suitcase. If it is included in the cost of the ticket, the weight limit is usually 50 pounds. It also generally takes 3-4 flights to get from the United States to the airport in Croatia, where we land (we take a bus from the airport to Niksic, Montenegro). The more luggage you take the greater the chances are that something will get lost.

Travel. Light.

We suggest the following list:
A small Bible (if you have one downloaded onto your smartphone, that is even better)
A photocopy of your passport in your luggage
A photocopy of your passport for your team leader
Sports appropriate attire (enough for 4 days of sports sessions)
Hair ties
Sports shoes (appropriate for your chosen sport)
Flip-flops or sandals
5-6 pairs of socks
Underwear (personal...we don't want to give you the detailed list here)
A light jacket for when it is chilly
A compact umbrella
A washcloth (they don't use them in Montenegro, so they don't provide you with one)
Lip balm
Casual clothes to wear when we go out in the evenings
Deodorant...please
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
3 oz bottles of Shampoo and Condtioner
Soap
Personal care items
Money to spend on meals while you travel to and from Montenegro
Money to spend in town when you are at Camp Monty

What they provide at the University:
Towels
Beds
Bedding
Pillows
Breakfast
Lunch
Dinner

Do NOT bring:
Blow dryers, curling irons, flatirons, etc. (The outlets are different and don't plug into the European outlets, and even if you manage to get a European outlet converter, using hair equipment usually blows the circuit.)
Clothing with offensive graphics or wording
Short shorts or skirts (follow the fingertip rule: hang your hands down by your sides, and if your shorts or skirt reach your fingertips or lower, you are fine)

How long will it take to travel to montenegro?

This really depends on where your journey begins. However, the travel time usually averages 24 hours by the time you transfer planes and endure unavoidable layovers. Be patient and enjoy the journey.

where will we stay when we get to Niksic?

We stay at the University in Niksic.

The accommodations are humble and not what you are probably used to enjoying. This is where it is important to remember that this is a missions trip. The locals who work at the University are kind and look forward to our team coming to town. They go out of their way to provide us with everything that they can, and they are part of the mission field.

Be grateful.
Be thankful.
Be ready.

The dormitory is 4 floors and we usually take up all 4 floors. You will be in a room with two beds, so pair up before you go! There are no elevators and there is no air conditioning. If you need accommodations for any handicap, please let us know when you reserve your spot and we will make sure to get you a room on the first floor. If there are no more rooms on the first floor, we will let you know right away.

When we stay at the University, they provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Yes, the food is different, but it is always well prepared and is always great. However, everyone is different. There are restaurants in town and you are welcome to go out to eat whenever you like.

What will the weather be like in Montenegro?

The weather is similar to the weather throughout the United States. It is not as hot as Florida, but pretty close to summer in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc.

Dates for Camp Monty

Travel Dates
Traveling from the United States to Niksic, Montenegro can take a lot out of a person. Depending on how you or your team coordinator arranges travel, it can take up to two days to arrive in Niksic. We set the schedule to allow for travel time and then jet lag adjustment. We also want you to be able to meet other team members that will be working with you during your time at Camp Monty. We spend Saturday and Sunday getting aquainted, finalizing plans, and praying for the kids that will be attending the camp throughout the week.

Afterwards we allow fore two days of "decompression." Many of our teams take these two days to visit areas throughout the region, hiking, learning, and sharing about how the week impacted their lives. There are many glorious stories that come out of the weeks of Camp Monty, and most people leave in tears, praying that they will be able to return the following year. These two days are important as you pray and talk with each other about your experience.

Camp Dates
These are the actual days of camp. A sample schedule is below. However, a more detailed, true schedule will be available in May of each year. The travel dates and camp dates are solid. The activities adjust as coaches and volunteers commit to helping us serve this community.

How much support do I need to raise?

The trip cost is $2500.
  • $1500 covers airfare from your point of origin to Niksic, Montenegro, travel to the recovery retreat, and airfare back to the United States and your point of origin.
  • $1000 covers room, board, and the 2 day recovery retreat that follows Camp Monty.
Additional monies that may be needed:
  • Passport fees range from $110-175, depending on what you will be needing (new, renewal, age, etc.). Your local post office will be able to help you get your passport. If they are not equipped to process applications for passports, they can tell you which post office can process your application. Photos for your passport can be taken at Walmart (average cost is $7), or you can get them done at the post office (average cost is $40, but they are guaranteed to be the accepted size, clarity, and what is accepted via government standards).
*Click here to read about applying for a passport or renewing your current passport.
  • Spending money. This is a personal decision. Many items that may be purchased throughout your week in Niksic are considerably less expensive than what you would pay in America. However, what you choose to buy is up to you. Keep in mind that you are responsible for making sure that all of your purchases and belongings meet luggage requirements through your airline.
  • If you are checking baggage at the airport, many airlines now charge money per stowed piece of luggage. Please check with your airline to be sure you are prepared for this (or these) charges. Pack light! or take everything you may need on a carry-on, if you can.

Can't go? Sponsor a team!

There are always teams that need financial support. We have several who come every year, and they have become great friends. The kids who have attended Camp Monty year after year wait at the gates of the University of Niksic when they know the bus of volunteers is due to arrive. They love the leaders, and the leaders and volunteers love these kids.

If you cannot go, pray about sponsoring a team. These teams work all year to raise support to go back to Montenegro to share the love of Jesus Christ with this country.  Your financial contribution will help to continue this incredible ministry, and it will help to send teams of incredible volunteers to an area that needs to know the hope and love of Jesus Christ.
